A groundbreaking Mixed Reality horror experience that transforms your home into a playground of terror, featuring Ambisonic audio that brings fear to life in full 360° immersion

I’m excited to share more details about Shattered, a groundbreaking Mixed Reality horror escape game recently launched by Playside Studios Australia for Meta Quest 3 and 3S!
This innovative title represents a significant leap forward in Mixed Reality gaming, as it seamlessly blends virtual horrors with your actual living space, creating an unprecedented level of immersion where the comfort of your home becomes part of the terrifying experience.

Built from the ground up for mixed-reality, Shattered’s labyrinth of escape rooms and mind-twisting puzzles challenges perception, problem-solving, and sanity.
What makes this game particularly unique is how it transforms your physical environment into part of the gameplay – imagine supernatural entities emerging from your actual walls, or ghostly apparitions lurking in the corners of your own room!

Audio plays a crucial role in creating the game’s intense atmosphere, and I was honored to be commissioned to craft all Ambisonic ambiences that enhances the horror experience.

My work focused on creating full-sphere 360° soundscapes that adapt dynamically to player movement and position. These Ambisonic ambiences include subtle creaking floorboards, distant whispers, unsettling effects, and ethereal resonances that seem to move around and through your actual space.
Working together with an incredible audio team including John Guscott, Zachary Zulaga, Pascal Cross, Alec Bathman, and Kevin Manthei, with exceptional voice acting from SIDE Global, we created a truly immersive soundscape that breaks the boundaries between virtual and physical reality.
Using the Emotitone Circle as a guide, I carefully designed the progression of ambient sounds throughout the game, mapping emotional states to musical notes to create a deeply engaging and unsettling experience.

The Ambisonic technology allows sounds to move freely in three-dimensional space, creating a hyper-realistic audio environment where players can pinpoint the direction of every threatening sound. These spatial audio elements respond dynamically to player actions and physical movement, enhancing the game’s psychological horror elements by blurring the line between what’s real and what’s virtual. When a creepy sound seems to come from behind your actual couch or from inside your real walls, the horror becomes much more personal and intense.
